Project - Symbiosis Bangladesh Overview PDF Print E-mail

As a representative of the staff of Symbiosis, I consider 2006-07 to have been a very good and important year for the organisation in our efforts to assist the poor in our working areas. In particular, I would like to highlight five areas where significant progress was made:

Project Management Committees: These are a recent innovation within Symbiosis in order to help foster accountable team management of projects.

Each project has a PMC consisting of the project’s manager, accountant and two other staff. This committee takes joint decisions on all matters related to the running of the project. Although new in 2006-07, the PMCs are functioning well and making a positive contribution to the running of both the projects and Symbiosis as a whole.

New Staff: During 2006-7, Symbiosis employed a number of new staff who are contributing greatly to the capacity of the organisation. Many of these are young women and men with good educational qualifications and energy levels.

SPECS Project: The Symbiosis Primary Eye Care Service (SPECS) commenced during the 2006-07 program year. This is a very important new project that supplements the existing projects in the Symbiosis Health Program by providing preventative eye health awareness-raising and other primary eye care services to the poor.

Preschools: Many Symbiosis projects include the running of preschools in their activities. Particularly during 2006-07, it has become apparent that these are a very effective way of both ensuring that children have access to early education and – more importantly – that the children are able to then integrate into mainstream education.

Community Acceptance: In the past twelve months, it is becoming more evident that Symbiosis has become a trusted and respected organisation within the communities in which it works. This is not easy to achieve, but is the result of rajumany years of committed work and relationship-building by the staff. In contrast to other years, there were relatively few problems experienced by Symbiosis in the carrying out of our programs. The State of Emergency declared by the government in January 2007 did prevent various projects from carrying out democracy awareness-raising activities. However, the impact of the SE was less than it could have been and has been more than offset by the relative stability that has followed. In all, it has been a good year for Symbiosis and one that encourages us to keep up our work and to continue to grow as we strive to bring hope to the poor in our country.
